CAF honours Osimhen, Lookman, Bassey in AFCON 2025 team of the tournament

Nigeria’s Super Eagles were among the biggest winners of the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations in Morocco, as Victor Osimhen, Ademola Lookman and Calvin Bassey were named in the Confederation of African Football’s (CAF) official Team of the Tournament.

CAF released the AFCON 2025 Best XI on Wednesday, highlighting the players who delivered standout performances across the competition, with Nigeria boasting three inclusions following an impressive campaign that ended with a bronze medal finish.

Osimhen once again led the Super Eagles from the front, scoring four goals and providing two assists to drive Nigeria’s run to the podium. His influence proved decisive as Nigeria secured a record ninth third-place finish in AFCON history.

Lookman emerged as one of the tournament’s most dangerous attackers, finishing with the highest number of goal contributions. The winger scored four goals and supplied three assists, earning a place in the Team of the Tournament for the second consecutive AFCON.

At the back, Calvin Bassey was a commanding presence in Nigeria’s defence. The 26-year-old played a crucial role in a solid backline that produced key clean sheets during the knockout stages, underlining Nigeria’s defensive resilience.

Senegal’s Sadio Mané was named Player of the Tournament, while Morocco’s Brahim Díaz finished as the competition’s top scorer. Yassine Bounou (Bono) claimed the award for best goalkeeper.

The rest of the CAF Best XI features Idrissa Gueye, Pape Gueye, Achraf Hakimi, Moussa Niakhaté and Noussair Mazraoui.

Senegal went on to lift the AFCON 2025 title after edging hosts Morocco 1-0 in extra time in a tense final, while Nigeria sealed third place with a penalty shootout victory over Egypt.
