The Nigeria Women’s Football League (NWFL) will welcome four new challengers next season as Imo Striker Queens, Sunshine Queens, Castmog Ladies, and Ahudiyannem Queens sealed promotion from the 2025 Championship playoffs.
The decisive tournament, which concluded this week, produced thrilling performances and underlined the increasing competitiveness of women’s football across the country.
Imo Striker Queens stole the spotlight by producing a flawless campaign, collecting nine points from three matches to secure their debut in the NWFL. Sunshine Queens matched that achievement, winning all their fixtures to also finish on nine points and reclaim their place among the elite.
For Sunshine Queens, the promotion marks a swift return after their relegation in the 2023–24 campaign. Their resurgence has been powered by a mix of experienced players and youthful talents eager to restore the club’s reputation in the top tier. Supporters of the Akure-based side will be hopeful that the bitter memories of relegation will now give way to a brighter era.
Castmog Ladies and Ahudiyannem Queens also wrote their names into the history books by securing promotion for the first time. Castmog Ladies impressed with six points, while Ahudiyannem Queens displayed resilience to finish top of their group on seven points. Both sides will now prepare for the challenge of competing against established NWFL clubs in their maiden appearances.
The success of three debutants alongside the return of a former heavyweight highlights the depth of talent emerging in Nigeria’s women’s football scene. With new rivalries set to develop and fresh storylines expected, the 2025–26 season promises to bring an added layer of excitement to the domestic game.
The NWFL board is yet to announce when the new campaign will begin, but anticipation is already building as the promoted clubs gear up for life in Nigeria’s top flight.
