Super Eagles Begin AFCON 2025 Preparations with Egypt Friendly in Cairo

As part of their build-up to the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON), the Super Eagles of Nigeria will face the Pharaohs of Egypt in an international friendly on Tuesday at the Cairo International Stadium.

‎Preparations officially began on Sunday as the Super Eagles’ camp opened at the Renaissance Hotel in Cairo, with coaches and backroom staff already on ground. According to the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN), no fewer than 10 players have so far reported to camp as the team intensifies its readiness for the tournament.

‎Goalkeeper Francis Uzoho was the first player to arrive, landing in Cairo shortly after 2 a.m. local time. His arrival marked the start of full squad mobilisation. Uzoho, who returns to the national team after more than a year away, is one of the three goalkeepers included in head coach Eric Chelle’s 28-man squad.

‎Stanley Nwabali was the second player to arrive, followed by Fisayo Dele-Bashiru and Ebenezer Akinsanmiro, increasing the number of players in camp to four.

‎Later arrivals included Amas Obasogie, Semi Ajayi, Ademola Lookman, Igho Ogbu, Bright Osayi-Samuel and Tochukwu Nnadi, bringing the total number of players in camp to 10. More players are expected to join the team in the coming hours.

‎NAN reports that the three-time African champions are scheduled to hold their first training session later on Sunday.

‎Nigeria will head into the 2025 AFCON determined to improve on their runners-up finish at the previous edition, where they suffered a 2–1 defeat to hosts Ivory Coast in the final. The Super Eagles are targeting a fourth continental title, having previously lifted the trophy in 1980, 1994 and 2013.

‎The 2025 Africa Cup of Nations will take place in Morocco, kicking off on December 21 and concluding on January 18, 2026.
