Nigeria’s Super Falcons have secured their place at the 2026 Women’s Africa Cup of Nations (WAFCON) after defeating the Amazons of Benin 3–1 on aggregate on Tuesday.
Ashleigh Plumptre made it a night to remember in Abeokuta, scoring her first-ever goal for the national team and playing a key role in sealing Nigeria’s qualification.
Although the Falcons started strongly, Benin managed to pull one back in the second half through Yasminath Djibril’s powerful header.
Nigeria’s earlier 2–0 victory in Cotonou last week proved decisive, as the aggregate scoreline of 3–1 sent the Super Falcons through to next year’s continental showpiece.
Speaking after the match, Plumptre expressed her joy and gratitude, saying she felt “overwhelmed” to net her first goal for Nigeria.
“It’s such a special feeling,” she said. “I’m proud to have helped the team qualify. The support from the fans has been incredible, and this team absolutely deserves to be at WAFCON.”
Head coach Justin Madugu commended his players for their discipline and resilience, noting that the result was exactly what they needed.
“We understood the importance of this game,” Madugu stated. “The win in the first leg gave us a solid platform, and we were determined to complete the task at home.”
