Sporting Lagos have secured their return to the Nigeria Premier Football League (NPFL) after beating Osun United 1-0 in a tense Nigeria National League (NNL) match played in Ileogbo on Thursday.
Before the match, the Lagos team knew they had to win to gain promotion. Akwa United followed closely behind them on the table, just one point away. Because of this, Sporting Lagos started the game with clear focus and strong determination. They controlled most parts of the match and kept searching for a goal that would change everything.
Their effort paid off when Alex Leme scored the only goal of the match. He finished calmly and gave his team the lead at an important moment. After scoring, Sporting Lagos quickly changed their approach. They focused on defending their lead and making sure they did not lose control of the game.
However, Osun United did not give up easily. They attacked more and tried to find an equaliser. This forced goalkeeper Clinton Lawal to step up. He made several important saves and protected his team’s lead until the final whistle.
At the same time, Akwa United also won their match 2-1 against Solution FC in Awka. This result kept the pressure high until the end. Still, Sporting Lagos stayed strong and finished top of the NNL Conference B table with 36 points, just one point above Akwa United.
This victory confirms Sporting Lagos’ return to the NPFL after spending two seasons in the lower division. The team had been relegated in 2024 after just one season in the top league, so this promotion shows great improvement and determination.
Now, Sporting Lagos will join Inter Lagos and Ikorodu City as Lagos teams in the NPFL. Also, Doma United have already secured promotion, while other teams continue to fight for the remaining spots.
Next, the promoted teams will compete in the Super 4 play-off in Ikenne to decide the NNL champion.
