Lee Carsley to Lead England as Interim Manager Amid Transition

Lee Carsley, head coach of England’s Under-21 team, has been appointed as the interim manager for England’s senior squad during the upcoming Nations League matches in September. Carsley, born on February 28, 1974, is an English-born former professional footballer with Irish heritage. Before taking on this role, he had coaching stints with Coventry City, Brentford, Birmingham City, and England’s U-20 and U-21 teams.

Carsley, 50, steps in following Gareth Southgate’s resignation just two days after England’s Euro 2024 final defeat against Spain. He expressed confidence in his familiarity with the players and the international football cycle, stating that it made sense for him to guide the team during this transitional period while the FA continues its search for a permanent manager.

Initially, Carsley will lead England in September’s away fixture against the Republic of Ireland and a home match against Finland, with the possibility of extending his interim role throughout the autumn. His primary focus is on maintaining continuity and achieving promotion in the UEFA Nations League.
