A Lifetime Dedicated to Football Administration
Issa Hayatou, the long-serving former president of the Confederation of African Football (CAF), has passed away at the age of 77 on Thursday, August 8, 2024. A prominent figure in sports administration, Hayatou led CAF for 29 years, from 1988 to 2017, making significant contributions to African football during his tenure. He was also an influential member of FIFA, serving on its executive committee from 1990 to 2017 and briefly holding the position of acting FIFA president from 2015 to 2016 following Sepp Blatter’s suspension.
His Role in CAF and FIFA
During his time as CAF president, Hayatou played a crucial role in the expansion of African football on the global stage. Under his leadership, the African Cup of Nations (AFCON) grew in prominence, and more African teams gained entry into the FIFA World Cup. He was instrumental in securing FIFA World Cup slots for African nations, increasing their representation and competitiveness on the international scene.
Additionally, Hayatou was a member of the International Olympic Committee for 15 years and remained an honorary member until his passing. His efforts to develop football across Africa led to increased sponsorship deals and infrastructural development for African football associations.
Controversies and Criticism
Despite his numerous achievements, Hayatou’s legacy is not without controversy. Many believed that during his time as CAF president, he made decisions that favored Cameroon, his native country, even when such decisions could have negatively impacted other African nations.
His career was also marred by a one-year ban from FIFA in 2021 for breaching its code of ethics related to a media rights deal with French company Lagardère in 2016. Although the ban was later overturned by the Court of Arbitration for Sport in 2022, it cast a shadow over his final years in sports administration.
A Passionate Athlete Turned Leader
Before dedicating his life to sports governance, Hayatou was an accomplished track athlete and basketball player. His early career in sports laid the foundation for his leadership in football administration, where he became one of the most influential figures in African football.
Tributes from the Football Community
Hayatou’s passing has prompted tributes from around the world. FIFA president Gianni Infantino expressed his condolences on behalf of FIFA to Hayatou’s family, friends, and colleagues. African football federations have also honored his contributions to the game, recognizing the lasting impact he had on the sport across the continent.
