Nigeria’s Falconets displayed remarkable resilience on Saturday as they secured qualification for the 2026 FIFA U-20 Women’s World Cup despite a narrow 2-1 defeat in the second leg.
The team advanced with a 3-2 aggregate victory, booking their spot at the tournament scheduled for Poland from September 5 to 27.
Malawi struck first in the ninth minute when Faith Chimzimu headed home to give the hosts an early lead. Nigeria responded aggressively, with Kindness Ifeanyi delivering a dangerous cross that Favour Nkwocha met powerfully, only for her shot to crash against the woodwork.
Chimzimu doubled Malawi’s lead in the 56th minute, temporarily leveling the aggregate score and intensifying pressure on the visitors. However, Nigeria struck back swiftly. Substitute Precious Oscar rose to the occasion in the 62nd minute, netting the decisive goal that restored the Falconets’ aggregate advantage and sealed qualification.
The Falconets had taken a commanding 2-0 lead in the first leg on May 2 in Ikenne, Ogun State. They earlier progressed by thrashing Rwanda 5-0 on aggregate and overcoming Senegal 3-1 on aggregate.
This qualification extends Nigeria’s strong tradition in African women’s youth football, positioning the Falconets as one of the continent’s powerhouses at the U-20 level.
Portugal claimed the most recent FIFA U-17 World Cup title in 2025, defeating Austria 1-0 in the final hosted in Qatar. Nigeria continues to lead the all-time U-17 winners list with five titles.
