Flying Eagles head coach, Aliyu Zubairu, says his players are ready to give their all when Nigeria takes on high-flying Argentina in the Round of 16 at the 2025 FIFA U-20 World Cup in Santiago, Chile.
The seven-time African champions booked their place in the knockout stage as one of the best third-placed teams, following a mixed run in the group phase. In contrast, Argentina have looked unstoppable, winning all three of their group matches to maintain a perfect record so far in the competition.
Despite the daunting challenge ahead, Zubairu remains upbeat and believes his team has what it takes to shock the South Americans.
“Every game is a new challenge, and we’ll prepare with the same mentality — focus, discipline, and teamwork,” Zubairu said after Nigeria’s qualification was confirmed. “We respect Argentina, but it’s a challenge that must be overcome.”
The Flying Eagles have a recent history of upsetting the odds against Argentina, having eliminated the South Americans at the same stage of the last edition of the U-20 World Cup. That result serves as a source of confidence for Zubairu’s side as they aim to repeat the feat and continue their quest for a first-ever world title at this level.
Argentina, meanwhile, will look to extend their dominance in youth football, boasting a squad filled with technically gifted players who have dazzled throughout the tournament. However, Nigeria’s blend of speed, strength, and tactical organization could pose a serious threat to their ambitions.
The encounter promises to be one of the most exciting fixtures of the Round of 16, featuring two nations with proud footballing traditions and passionate fan bases. Both sides are expected to go all out for a place in the quarterfinals.
Kick-off is scheduled for Wednesday evening at Santiago’s iconic Estadio Nacional Julio Martínez Prádanos, where a vibrant atmosphere is anticipated as the Flying Eagles look to soar once again on the world stage.
