WAFCON 24: Super Falcons Progress to Finals with Victory Over South Africa

In pursuit of their tenth appearance in the finals of the Women’s Africa Cup of Nations, Nigeria’s Super Falcons secured a victory over South Africa with a score of two goals to one at the Larbi Zaouli Stadium in Casablanca.

Maintaining the same starting lineup from the match against Zambia, the Super Falcons dominated the first half of the match, with Rasheedat Ajibade opening the scoring through a penalty kick.

During the first forty-eight minutes, the Super Falcons exhibited a promising performance, registering four shots on target, while the South African team, despite having greater ball possession, managed to produce only one shot on goal.

In the second half, however, Coach Justin Magudu’s team struggled to maintain its lead after a penalty was awarded to South Africa’s Linda Motlhalo as a result of Osinachi Ohale, who incurred a foul by grappling the shirt of a South African player within the penalty area.

Despite the departure of Jennifer Echegini due to a minor injury, which had impacted the midfield’s effectiveness, the Super Falcons remained resolute in their defense.

In a decisive moment, Michelle Alozie scored from long range in the 94th minute, securing the lead for Nigeria and ensuring their advancement to the semifinals.

Captain Rasheedat Ajibade was recognized for her exceptional performance, earning her third “Woman of the Match” award for today’s fixture.
