Chelsea Dominate the Ball but Hull City Refuse to Go Away

Chelsea will probably look at this result as two points dropped.
The home side controlled possession and spent long periods around the Hull penalty area, but possession alone does not win Premier League matches.
Hull demonstrated that perfectly.
Mohamed Belloumi was outstanding, scoring twice and repeatedly causing problems for Chelsea’s defence. His performance was even more impressive considering Hull had considerably less of the ball.
Chelsea reportedly finished with 68 percent possession, 36 touches inside the Hull box and seven shots on target. Yet Hull produced the better expected goals figure, approximately 1.49 xG compared with Chelsea’s 0.89.
That tells an important story.
Chelsea had plenty of the ball, but Hull created dangerous opportunities when they needed them.
João Pedro was Chelsea’s brightest attacking player, contributing a goal and an assist. His combination of finishing and creativity continues to make him one of the more interesting attacking players to watch this season.
The concern for Chelsea is at the other end. If they want to challenge Arsenal and the other title contenders, conceding twice at home in matches like this cannot become a habit.

Liverpool Frustrated by Disciplined Fulham
Liverpool 0–0 Fulham
Anfield expected goals. Fulham brought organisation.
Liverpool controlled periods of the match but struggled to turn possession into the clear opportunities normally associated with their attack.
Fulham deserve considerable credit.
Rather than spending the entire match desperately defending their penalty area, they remained disciplined, compact and difficult to break down.
For Liverpool, the concern was not simply failing to score. It was how few genuinely decisive attacking moments they produced.
A 0–0 draw at Anfield will always feel like an opportunity missed for Liverpool, particularly when their title rivals are winning.

Another match. Another blank for Tottenham.
Spurs have now reportedly gone 407 Premier League minutes without scoring.
That is no longer a minor attacking problem.

Tottenham had possession against Everton but lacked the movement, final pass and finishing required to turn control into goals.
Everton, meanwhile, were comfortable with their defensive responsibilities.

Aston Villa finally found the net in the Premier League, but it still wasn’t enough to produce the result they desperately needed.
Forest remained competitive throughout the match and were rewarded when Igor Jesus struck the late winner.
Villa’s problem appears to go beyond simply scoring goals.
They need greater control in decisive periods of matches.
Forest showed exactly the opposite quality. They remained patient, stayed in the contest and took their opportunity when it arrived.
For a team playing away from home, that is often the difference between leaving with nothing and travelling home with three points.

Kevin Schade Shows Brentford How to Be Ruthless
Bournemouth 2–2 Brentford
If football matches were decided purely by chances created, Bournemouth would probably have won this comfortably.
They weren’t.
Bournemouth reportedly generated approximately 2.18 expected goals compared with just 0.50 for Brentford. They also registered 10 shots on target while Brentford managed only two.
The remarkable part?
Both of Brentford’s shots on target went in.

Ipswich Win Five Goal Thriller at Crystal Palace
Crystal Palace 2–3 Ipswich Town
Selhurst Park produced the most dramatic match of the afternoon.
Five goals, a red card and a late winner gave supporters almost everything they could ask for.
Axel Disasi’s dismissal changed the balance of the contest and gave Ipswich an opportunity to attack a Palace side playing with 10 men.
They eventually took advantage.
Zian Flemming delivered the decisive moment with the late winner, while Leif Davis also played an influential role.
Palace will understandably look back at the red card as a major turning point, but Ipswich still had to make the numerical advantage count.
They did.
For a club looking to establish itself at Premier League level, away victories like this can become extremely valuable later in the season.

Several players made strong cases, but David Raya, Mohamed Belloumi and Kevin Schade sit at the top of Saturday’s list.
David Raya, Arsenal: The penalty save at 0–0 changed the complexion of Arsenal’s match. He also produced another important stop late in the game.
Mohamed Belloumi, Hull City: Scoring twice away at Chelsea is enough to make almost any player of the day shortlist. Doing it while your team has considerably less possession makes the performance even more impressive.
Kevin Schade, Brentford: Two shots on target. Two goals. Bournemouth dominated most attacking statistics, but Schade demonstrated why finishing remains football’s most valuable attacking skill.

Arsenal look increasingly difficult to stop.
